Preserving and restoring the quality of water resources is becoming increasingly important as global demands on fresh water sources escalate. The quality of our lakes, rivers, wetlands, and estuaries is dependent upon interactions between ecology, hydrology, and biogeochemistry. It is these complex interactions that are the focus of my teaching and research. Specifically, I am interested in the role that organic matter plays in water, air, and soil environments. Most of the interesting ecological and hydrologic questions in natural and urban environments require an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, my research has been and continues to be at the intersection of the sciences, integrating field methods, laboratory analyses, and numerical modeling to solve environmental problems. Current studies include evaluating the role of dissolved organic matter in the mobilization of arsenic in Bangladesh aquifers and the influence of atmospheric deposition on remote alpine ecosystems.
